 Yak Aik-Wee (b.1972) is a multi-disciplinary artist born and based in Singapore. His work covers the genres of music composition, sound-design, dance and theatre performance and more recently, playwriting. He began writing plays in 2006 and has taken part in TheatreWorks' Writers' Lab Greenhouse (2006-2007), facilitated by Dr. Robin Loon; and National Arts Council's Mentor Access Project (MAP) (2007-2009), mentored by Tan Tarn How. Plays include Streetwalkers, which won the Best New Play award at Action Theatre's Theatre Idols 2009 and went on to receive a successful staging in August 2009; Lester's List, a 10-minute play staged at Short & Sweet Syndey 2009, Top 100; and Short & Sweet Singapore 2007, Top 20. He also wrote and directed Live The Singapore Dream and Trash Town, two 30-minute plays for produced by Creative Tree Productions, currently staged at local primary and secondary schools across Singapore. Credits for music compositions for dance include Water Footprints, commissioned for the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2009, Subtext ii Singapore and Guangzhou (Mayhem Project), GHOST (Crow Jane), FireBall (ECNAD). Theatre pieces My Beautiful Companion (Theatreworks) and Lonely Planet (luna-id). Musicals Sam's List (SouthEast CDC/Thinking Theatre) and Live It Up! (NorthEast CDC/Thinking Theatre) Aik-Wee was awarded the National Arts Council - Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship in 2000 to study Music Composition at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts. He graduated with a Music Diploma with Distinction in 2003. His music compositions have been performed publicly since his first year at the institution, beginning with Philharmonic Winds' Local Composers’ Concert 2001 and The Esplanade's Music Box 2001. His music-suite Nocturne - Mystery and Mischief under the Moon was presented to guests including Singapore's President, S.R. Nathan at the President's Young Talents Exhibition 2001.
Prior to his music studies, he served as an Artiste with the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (SAF MDC), performing extensively locally and at overseas deployments including Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei. As actor and dancer, he has appeared in numerous stage and TV productions including Star Trek World Tour (Singapore), Guys and Dolls (Toy Factory), Kampong Amber (Music and Movement and MDC), Growing Up (MediaCorp Singapore), and Child (Tammy L. Wong Dance Company). Prior to his music studies, he served as an Artiste with the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company (SAF MDC), performing extensively locally and at overseas deployments including Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei. Aik-Wee's interest in the different art forms began at the age of 12 in his high school military band where he played the flute; 2 years later, he acted in his first drama production for an amateur company - Arts and Acts; And at age 17, he began his dance training, and continued to study ballet for a decade under the guidance of the late Antonnio Llacer at Dance Arts Singapore. During this period, he had also acquired a certificate in Graphic Design and a Grade 5 theory Certificate of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music(ABRSM).
Besides the performing arts, Aik-Wee is occasionally involved in poster and publicity design for local arts groups. His work in this area includes poster design for Luna-Id Production's "Eleemosynary" and "Joined at the Head", and publicity design for Crow Jane's "GHOST".
